Douyin / WeChat Channels / TikTok vertical covers

⏱️ 20 min

In the short-video era, the thumbnail IS the traffic valve.

Open Douyin's home feed and you'll swipe past 3-5 videos in a single screen. How long does each video get to "look at" you? 1 second.

That 1 second decides — play or swipe past. And 70% of the decision comes from the cover — the visual, the facial expression, the headline text, the color contrast. Drop any one of these and CTR tanks 30%.

This chapter gives you cover prompt templates for the three big short-video platforms (Douyin / WeChat Channels / TikTok), plus how to write 1-second-grab headline text, the platform UI safety zone specs, and real CTR optimization data from the trenches.

1. Three Platforms — Key Dimensions + UI Safe Zones

PlatformRatioRecommended pixelsUI safe zone (must stay clear)
Douyin9:161080×1920Top 100px + bottom 200px
WeChat Channels9:16 / 1:11080×1920 / 1080×1080Top 80px + bottom 240px
TikTok9:161080×1920Top 80px + bottom 220px

The UI safe zone is where the platform player overlays its own UI — follow buttons, progress bars, captions, like icons. Never put critical content in those areas. If it gets covered, your cover lost the message.

2. The 1-Second Grab Headline Prompt Template

Full template:

Vertical 9:16 video cover, 1080×1920.

Background: a young person looking shocked at their laptop screen,
dramatic split lighting (left half cool blue, right half warm amber),
slight motion blur on edges, eyes wide open, mouth slightly open in surprise.

Top huge Chinese headline (white text with thick red outline,
positioned in safe area between 100px and 600px from top,
occupies top 1/3 height, 4-character impact):
"震惊!AI 替我做了"

Subhead below (smaller yellow, 600px-800px from top):
"整整 8 小时的工作"

Style: dramatic vlog thumbnail, high contrast,
slight saturation boost, attention-grabbing first-second hook.

Exact text only.
TOP 100px and BOTTOM 200px must be COMPLETELY CLEAN
(no key elements, no important text) for platform UI overlays.

Three 1-second-grab tricks

  1. Big-head close-up + facial expression — takes up 50%+ of the cover, expression has to be over the top
  2. 4-character headline + high-contrast color — 4 characters is what the eye can read in 1 second
  3. Suspense / reversal phrase — "AI replaced me..." pulls 5x the click rate of "AI tool review"

3. WeChat Channels vs Douyin vs TikTok — Tonal Differences

Don't drop a Douyin cover straight onto Channels. The aesthetic gap is huge.

Channels cover prompt — adjusted for 35+ users

Vertical 9:16 cover, 1080×1920.

Subject: a 40-something professional in business casual,
calm but engaged expression, in a clean office setting.

Top medium Chinese headline (dark navy bold, sober):
"30 年职场老兵告诉你"

Subhead (warm gray, smaller):
"AI 时代不被替代的 5 个能力"

Style: editorial business photography, warm soft lighting,
trustworthy and professional, NOT dramatic or shocking.

The tone is dialed back 50% from Douyin — no "in-your-face" headline, no "shocked face." Channels users hate clickbait.

TikTok overseas aesthetic

Vertical 9:16 cover, 1080×1920.

A diverse group of young creators (mixed ethnicity: Asian, Black, White, Latino)
high-fiving in a vibrant studio,
neon pink + cyan lighting, energetic atmosphere.

Top bold English headline (white with subtle drop shadow):
"I tried this for 30 days"

Subhead (yellow, smaller):
"and it actually worked"

Style: gen-Z TikTok aesthetic, vibrant pop colors,
energetic and authentic (not over-polished),
slightly grainy real-life feel.

The TikTok keys: diverse cast + authentic feel (not too "ad-like") + English copy. Covers heavy with Chinese text get throttled by the overseas algorithm.

4. Three CTR Optimization Plays

Three high-CTR plays I've actually tested in the wild (each comes with a full template):

Play A: Contrast / reversal

Split the cover in half. Left vs right.

Top half: messy desk with frustrated person staring at code error.
Bottom half: same desk now clean, person smiling, code passing tests.
Headline (between two halves): "1 行 prompt 救了我"

Play B: Mystery / withhold

Subject is clear, but the key info is "blurred" or "withheld" — the reader has to click in to find out.

Subject: a person holding a check, but the amount is blurred / pixelated.

Play C: Number in your face

Slap the shocking number on at the largest font size and call it a day.

Background: minimal abstract.
Center huge text: "$50,000"

5. Times I Crashed and Burned

Crash 1: Top headline got eaten by the follow button

First time making a Douyin cover, I dropped "震惊!AI 替我做了" at 50px from the top — and the "震惊" characters got completely buried under the follow button + user avatar.

Fix: Top 100px stays empty. Always. Headline starts at 100px at the earliest. The safe sweet spot is between 100-600px (your big headline text has to live in that range).

Crash 2: Bottom caption hidden by the progress bar

Subhead at 100px from the bottom — and the progress bar pops up during playback and chops off the bottom row of text.

Fix: Leave 200px clear at the bottom. Subhead must end at 1720px at the latest (1920 - 200 = 1720).

Crash 3: Cover went to mush after Channels upload

1080×1920 looks crisp coming out of the model, but Channels turned it into mosaic after upload.

Fix:

  • Compress the file under 500KB (Channels compresses aggressively)
  • Before running TinyPNG / Squoosh, double-check contrast is strong enough
  • Bump up critical headline font sizes another 20% (to survive the compression)

Crash 4: TikTok algorithm throttle

A cover with too much Chinese text on TikTok International got throttled (the system flags it as "non-English market content").

Fix: TikTok covers go English-first. Chinese, at most, gets one subhead line. If you're going bilingual: main headline English + subhead Chinese (not the other way around).

6. What We've Seen

JR Academy ran 4 weeks of synced posting on WeChat Channels @JR匠人学院 and Douyin. Here's the data:

PlatformMonthly videosAvg cover CTRNotes
Douyin (shocked-big-text style)308.2%Exaggerated face + red text
Douyin (practical / useful style)304.5%Calm face + white text
Channels (Douyin shock-style copy-paste)302.1% ↓↓Users gagged on the clickbait
Channels (professional business tone)306.8%Warm tones + medium font size

The takeaway: Douyin and Channels need two separate cover prompts — the same approach flips its results between the two platforms.

7. Next Up

The next chapter — Ch 13 Bilibili / YouTube Horizontal Covers — moves into the long-video world, where the CTR logic changes (decision time is 3-5 seconds, not 1).

If you're in a hurry to ship one short video tonight:

  1. Match platform to prompt template (Douyin §2, Channels §3, TikTok §3)
  2. Top 100px + bottom 200px must stay clear
  3. Headline 4 characters + subhead 4-6 characters (any more and nobody finishes reading)
  4. After generating, preview on your phone (not your laptop) — confirm it reads in 1 second
  5. Compress under 500KB before uploading

The real winning move on short-video covers is psychology: your cover has to make the user "almost swipe past" — and just barely stop. If they stop, that's traffic.

📷 Real-World Short-Video Cover Cases

Two real short-video case studies from awesome-gpt-image (CC BY 4.0). Livestream screenshots and "ancient figures going live" are formats that crush across Douyin / Channels / TikTok alike.

Case 1: Douyin livestream screenshot (9:16 + Chinese sign)

Douyin Livestream Screenshot

Prompt:

9:16 aspect ratio, generate a screenshot of a Douyin live stream, inside is Liu Yifei live streaming, Liu Yifei is holding a sign in her hand, the sign says Tonight's live stream, welcome to join Yifei for a chat!

Douyin livestream 9:16 + host holding a sign + Chinese sign text — three things at once: public figure rendering, UI elements, and text rendering. This "fake livestream screenshot" format is a traffic magnet in short-video content ("If [celebrity] went live" series), and you can swap in your own virtual persona too.

Case 2: Ancient figures going live on Douyin (a series-account goldmine)

Ancient Figures Douyin Live

Prompt:

Generate a screenshot of [historical figure name] on [platform name]

Swap [historical figure] for Li Bai / Du Fu / Su Dongpo / Confucius, and [platform name] for Douyin / WeChat Channels / TikTok — and you've got a batch-producible "ancient figures go live" cover series. Pair it with copy like "If Li Bai opened a Douyin account" and CTR runs 2-3x normal covers. Reliable traffic source for any culture/history account.

多元化人物(Asian/Black/White/Latino 混合)+ 真实感(不要太"广告")+ 英文为主。
