12 seminars of 2 hours each for a total of 24 hours 2 workshops of 4 hours each in Week 0 Preparation/self-directed study: 2 hours per week for seminars, and 12 hours preparation for assessment tasks Group Problem Based Learning Tasks: Trainees work together in small groups, working through clinical scenarios/vignettes and associated short-answer questions. Four PBLTS will be released during the unit, covering a range of neuropsychological assessment competencies, and each trainee is required to be appointed as a group leader and/or scribe at least once. (1500 words) Test Kits: Trainees work as a group to construct an assessment kit hat they can use as a resource for their upcoming clinical placements. For each core neuropsychological tests covered during lectures, the kit should contain (i)administration/scoring instructions, (ii) sample responses sheets, and (iii) normative data. Throughout the semester, trainees meet to present, demonstrate and practice administration and scoring of these.
Assess functional implications of neuropsychological impairments as they relate to participating in activities of daily living, meaningful life roles and capacity to make decisions
Administer and interpret neuropsychological measures in clinical assessment, considering psychometric principles, associated cognitive-emotional-behavioral processes, premorbid functioning and longitudinal assessment principles
Manage limitations of neuropsychological assessments in diverse and vulnerable populations (including through critical evaluation, reflective practice, mitigation, and effective communication).
Apply evidence-based clinical reasoning and decision-making strategies, including psychometric/ operating characteristics and reliability/validity metrics, to optimise accuracy of neuropsychological formulations across the lifespan in empirically valid and culturally responsive ways
Construct neuropsychological biopsychosocial formulations using appropriate methodologies, including neuropsychological testing instruments, symptom and performance validity measures, neurobehavioural observations, measures of functionality and collateral information from multiple sources.
On successful completion of this unit, trainees should be able to apply the following competencies to neuropsychological assessment practices with adults in a culturally responsive manner:
Evaluate referral questions and generate hypotheses for diverse neuropsychological clinical scenarios, while gathering information from relevant sources such as file reviews and client/collateral interviews.
Communicate feedback and recommendations to stakeholders (e.g., clients, families, treating team) sensitively, and adapted to individual needs, and aligned with evidence-based practices.
Trainees work individually through clinical scenarios/vignettes and associated short-answer questions relating to key neuropsychological assessment competencies. This mid-semester exam focussed primarily on assessment planning and test interpretation. (3000 words)
