Many people ask me the same question: “I have some Python and SQL basics, but I don’t have real project experience yet. Can I start applying for jobs?” Here’s the honest answer: Python + SQL alone is not enough — not only in Australia, but also in Singapore, Malaysia, and even China. Companies are not hiring “someone who can write scripts.” They hire people who can turn requirements into real, production-ready systems. In this episode, I explain why your skills must be commercializable. That means you need to understand at least the fundamentals of real software engineering: APIs, backend frameworks, frontend basics, authentication, security, databases, testing, containerization, deployment, and engineering principles. Without that, you’re simply not reaching the minimum hiring bar — and your resume will likely never make it past the first screening stage. But the bigger issue is what’s coming next: 2026 will bring even more restructuring and layoffs across the industry. Many roles are not just “competitive” — they are shrinking or disappearing due to AI tooling and team restructuring. I also break down which roles are effectively “dead” in the current market, including traditional Data Science degrees, UI/UX, pure frontend-only or backend-only junior roles, and BA roles that only write PRDs. I also make a clear point: AI is not creating endless new jobs. Instead, it’s reducing labor demand — but a few roles are still growing. Based on what I’m seeing, the most realistic growth paths are: AI Engineer, AI Product Manager, AI Builder (a product + engineering hybrid who can deliver with AI coding), and IT Sales. Finally, I explain the two real ways people get hired: applying through resumes (where you get judged in seconds), and networking — which works like getting introduced through a trusted “matchmaker,” creating faster trust and much higher success rates. If you’re feeling stuck, switching careers, or wondering why you’re not even landing interviews, this video will give you the reality check — and the roadmap — you need.
