Paediatric nursing requires specialised skills and understanding of advanced paediatric pathophysiology, systematic assessment, management, and care. This unit provides you with the opportunity to apply advanced paediatric nursing principles and practice to the care of children with complex conditions. You will develop knowledge and skills to assess and care for the seriously ill and/or deteriorating child or young person. The importance of health promotion and illness prevention to provide safe and quality care, in collaboration with parents/caregivers will be explored. The concepts associated with transition to adult or community-based services, palliative and end-of-life care will also be discussed. Your study will include elements of clinical leadership including the role of the advanced practice nurse in optimising quality outcomes and in applying relevant ethical, legal and socio-cultural principles influencing patient and family centred care for children and young people.
